Xavier Exspectations

September 18, 2014

I set high goals and expectations for myself very high. I feel attending Xavier University is a big step closer to achieving my expectations and goals. I don’t expect Xavier to be easy these up coming years, but I know as long as I keep some balance and stay on top of my work I will do just fine. I am very hard on my self, self driven and determined. My first time hearing of Xavier I didn’t think it would really be a good fit for me, it didn’t sound fun or interesting. I didn’t think it would be a good fit with me until I actually visited the campus. I didn’t know Xavier was a relatively small campus compared to others. The fact that Xavier campus wasn’t so big meant that the classes wouldn’t be so huge. That was one thing i alimentally  liked right of bat, and the fact that I got a strong vibe as if I was part of the Xavier family just from there warm welcoming. I know I will fulfill my goals and expectations here at Xavier, Its a great program to be apart of. They take academics seriously, they have great resources all around to help with just about any need I may have. I look forward for whats to come the next couple of years I’m here.

A Series of events just led me here

August 30, 2014

I chose Xavier out of the blue, the school was not on my first list of colleges to apply to. I applied pretty much at the last minute but once I got accepted I knew I wasn’t going anywhere else. My family forced me to apply to a bunch of other schools I hated like Yale, Columbia, and Others, and I knew I wanted to be far away from all of my family. I got denied from my dream schools of UChicago, and Davidson so I only had Wake Forest and UNC Chapel Hill to choose from. Since I went to school In North Carolina already I did not want to attend any college there because so many kids from my high school already attended those schools already, and i believed it would just turn into another Garinger. My years at Garinger wasn’t my worst four years, but I just didn’t want that experience again.
Xavier was always sort of on my back up list. I did research so I knew all about the ratios and how it was a private catholic school and all of that. Although I knew all of this when I chose the school I expected a huge party. My cousin Went to this school in ’04 and she pretty much flunked out because she decided to treat it a a big party. I on the other hand i Expect partied here and there but i expect more from myself. I am a hard-worker (although this post is last lol) and i am usually on top of things. I expect campus life to get better as I get more adjusted to being here everyday because this is a VERY BIG change from how i am accustomed to living. i expect school to be waaay better than high school as in the way everybody is trying to learn the same stuff and there will be less distractions in the claasroom

Why did you choose to attend Xavier? What are your expectations?

August 29, 2014

I started applying to colleges at the beginning of my senior year. At first, I looked at in-state school, I’m from South Carolina, but then my grandma told me about Xavier University of Louisiana. I was a little hesitant about applying because it was so far from home, but then I heard about how well known it was for being number 1 in getting its black students into medical school. From a young age, I knew that I wanted to work in the medical field and after finding out about Xavier’s medical school acceptance rate I knew this was where I wanted to be. I definitely know that I want to go to medical school, but I’m not to sure where I want my major to take me. My interests in different medical occupations are sometimes frustrating because I do not have a definite answer to what I want to be when people ask me. All I can say is “I want to work in the medical field,” but at the same time I realize that while at XULA I will have plenty of opportunities to intern and shadow people in different medical professions. This school has high expectations of its students and I hold the same high expectations for the professors and staff. As a freshman, I am expecting to receive as much knowledge as possible from my professors and the others around me, and I am expecting to have all of my dream and wishes become a reality when I graduate. But the most important expectation I have, is to be able to leave this school well rounded and ready to face the world. I expect a lot from this school, but I know that all my expectations will easily be met. I chose Xavier because I know the possibilities of my future are endless, and this school will definitely make sure that I am successful in whatever occupation I chose.

Not just another number!!!

August 29, 2014

Xavier university is one of the best schools in the state of Louisiana to attend for the Biology major.  Xavier is also a small school, but small is  good in this case. I feel like I am apart of a family when I am walking around the campus. The vibe is great. When I first came to Xavier, I thought that I would miss all of my friends and that I would go through this state of depression; but being at Xavier has given me a chance to spread my wings and enjoy entirely different aspects of life. From the first day at orientation I felt as if I was not just some number or somebody that the university would just use to make some quick money. Some people would probably say that they came to this school because their parents when here, which is true for me because my step-mother attended Xavier and is now an alumnus of the school. Some might say because I’m a boy that I came to get with the young ladies , which I can’t deny it is a plus ,but I can to Xavier because I felt in my heart that the professors and faculty will do everything that they can to make sure I succeed  at what ever I want to be in life. Lucky ,I came to Xavier knowing that I wanted to become a orthodontists.  And just with me already knowing that, I have been put in all the classes and have been given all of the resources that I need to make it to my goal. I expect that Xavier will become my second family and that they would love me just and push me to success just as much as my family. I feel that at times things may get difficult but Xavier has given me all of the resources that I need to make sure that I graduate with “A’s” on my transcript and get accepted into a prestige dentistry school. So overall I expect to graduate with flying colors and become apart of a family not just being another number.

Xavier: The Starting Point

August 29, 2014

A year ago, if anyone were to ask me where I wanted to go to school for college, the answer was definitely Xavier. Not that any other school was a bad alternative, it just and has always been Xavier for me. Although it was not the only path I saw, it was the only one that was clear. Clear because it was taken, successfully, by so many of my family members that it was as one might say the safe route. But, in my opinion, the safe route was perfect for me. It is beyond reason for me to start on something that I do not see a future with. That is the main reason why I choose Xavier. It also helps to know that it is only 30 minutes away from home, well-populated and diverse.  Although, by all means, this is not saying that I don’t also appreciate Xavier’s rich history but regardless of that, Xavier was the goal. When deciding on colleges, it wasn’t the idea of what college wanted me but rather what college did I want. I wanted Xavier; I wanted everything I knew that could only be provided by this one school. My goals and expectations lead me to Xavier which I considered to be a starting point to a long, worthwhile journey. In the next 4 years, I expect Xavier to provide me with the more than enough knowledge so than I can move on to the next part of my journey feeling confident and prepared. I expect Xavier to not only provide me knowledge but to also aid me in broadening my perspective of the world around me. I expect to be shaped up to be the best I can possibly be because I choose to attend Xavier. I expect not only to achieve high but also feel that I have chosen the right school for me.

“Get Ready! Get Set! Go!”

August 29, 2014

As a graduate of the Mississippi School of Mathematics and Science, when choosing colleges, I searched for a university with similarities to my high school.  MSMS is a public boarding school which students in Mississippi apply to attend their junior and senior year. While attending, students receive preparation to excel in college and other aspects of life. My experience at MSMS was wonderful, yet tough. I learned concepts I wouldn’t have had to think about at my home high school. Also, at MSMS, community was a highly esteemed value along with creativity, scholarship and service. There were about 250 students enrolled at one time, and staying on campus allowed us to grow as a family. MSMS most definitely taught me many lessons, inside and outside of the classrooms. “Get Ready!”  If I attended the best high school in the state of Mississippi, why would I settle for less than the best University in the nation? Honestly, when researching and applying to colleges, Xavier was not on the top-five list. I didn’t know much about the University. Then, after visiting many college review websites and talking to fellow Xavierites, I most definitely wanted to attend. Xavier has such a great sense of community that everyone feels like family. Also, Xavier’s curriculum is greater and tougher than most colleges, but college is supposed to be a challenge to prepare students for life. “Get Set!” Xavier’s great reputation also reeled me in to attend college here. My plan is to become a doctor, and to achieve that you must attend medical school. Xavier is amongst the top schools in the nation placing students into medical school. Knowing that Xavier will prepare me for professional school and allow me to enjoy the great community, I chose to become a Xavierite. From Xavier I expect to earn a well deserved degree, through patience and hard work, and attend professional school well prepared.  I also expect to have made plenty of friends, and grown close nit with my classmates and other Xavierites.  With all that Xavier will allow me, I know that I will be more than ready to “Go!” and achieve greatly in life.

Blog 1: Why did you choose to attend Xavier? What are your expectations?

August 29, 2014

Hello! My name is Nicholas Davison and I am an incoming freshman attending Xavier University of Louisiana. Many factors came into play when deciding to attend Xavier University of Louisiana as my undergraduate school. One of the reasons was its location. Being an art major, location was one factor that I majorly took into consideration. With Xavier being set in New Orleans, Louisiana, it provided me the opportunity to explore one of the major cities of the southern region of the United States. New Orleans is known for its rich history in the arts, music, cuisine, and many other areas, so when deciding to attend Xavier’s location caught my eye. Another reason why I ultimately chose to attend Xavier was its Art program. While Xavier is highly known for its Pharmacy and Pre-Med program, the Fine Arts department of the school is very well catered to and offers amazing resources and teachings to the students with a Fine Arts major. Meeting the faculty apart of T.H.E. L.A.M.P. department helped me further assure myself that picking Xavier was a great choice as they were very kind and welcoming to all of us under the department.

My expectations for attending Xavier are very high! I definitely see myself garnering an amazing undergraduate education here, along with honing my art skills beyond my wildest dreams. I also see myself making great friendships with my fellow students and faculty. Along with those expectations, I also see myself being apart of amazing internships, learning so much about the culture and history of New Orleans, and making lifelong memories here at Xavier, rather it be through student events to late study nights for finals. The possibilities for my future here at Xavier are truly endless, and I cannot wait to explore what is in store for my freshman year.

Why did you choose to attend Xavier? What are your expectations?

I chose to attend Xavier because it was the best school for me. They offered me numerous scholarships and seemed very interested in me so i chose to come here. I did a campus tour and fell in love with the campus. Although Xavier is an HBCU, there is so much diversity they have to offer. I love the mixture and chance of meeting new people of my own kind, but i also enjoy meeting people of other nationalities. Xavier has one main purpose, to get students into school but out at the same time and I like that fact. They believe in the students and wont let them fail. Xavier is a school of excellence and high education. My goal was to be able to go to a school of such high stature and be able to say that graduated. Besides that, Xavier is the very best school for majoring in any of the sciences especially if you’re planning on entering into a medical field in the future which I am. Xavier is ranked as the top school for placing African Americans into medical school after graduation. These facts alone made me choose Xavier. They have a strong student body and school spirit that displays what the school is all about. Everybody here truly wants you to succeed. Plus we are located in New Orleans. A great place with amazing food, different cultures, and so much history wrapped up in it.  I expect for Xavier to do what they say they are going to do….not let me fail as a person, student, or individual. I expect them to help me to succeed and be able to become a pediatrician or ob-gyn. Overall I expect them to be memorable and have a wonderful college career. I expect Xavier to allow me to do great things and have my voice heard. I expect them to help me grow as a person and branch out and meet new people, create great contacts to become successful.

As a senior in high school, I found that  choosing a college was a vital part of “growing up”. It was of even greater importance in choosing the right environment where I would be able to prosper socially and academically. Coming from a small school, I was extremely excited about leaving my home and attending my dream school, Louisiana State University, simply for the cliche college experience. Even with the acceptance from Xavier, I found it very difficult to let go of my dream school.  However, I ultimately chose to attend Xavier University because I felt deep down that it was the better choice in terms of achieving academic success. Upon attending Lagniappe Weekend, I saw that the staff and administration were extremely dedicated in the way that they focused on getting me where I needed to be in order to succeed. I also decided to pick up two courses over the summer (Intro to Calculus and Chemistry I) hoping to get a feel of what it would be like to be a Xavierite. Much to my surprise, Xavier was everything and more than I expected from a top notch school. The staff is extremely dedicated to their students’ best interests and the current students are extremely welcoming to helping. Here at Xavier University, I hope to make the most of my college experience and I expect that staff and administration will do what it takes to help me pave the path to a successful future. Xavier has a great reputation in placing their students into medical schools and I can only hope that I will receive the education and guidance I need to make it there. Finally, I hope that Xavier can provide me the guidance and tools I need to become a better person both academically and socially. I expect nothing less.

Why did you choose to attend Xavier? What are your expectations?

August 29, 2014

I choose to attend Xavier University of Louisiana because I am invested in my future. When applying to colleges, I read that students of color from Xavier got admitted into their first choice medical school more than any other school in the country. That statistic definitely caught my interest. I have wanted to be a doctor ever since I was little, and this school seemed very serious about academics. I sent in my application, and found out I was accepted in January.

When I first came to visit Xavier, I was impressed with the academics and welcoming faculty and staff. The campus was beautiful, and I had a great day touring with my mom and aunt. Another aspect that helped me make my decision was the surrounding environment. I love big cities, and the city of New Orleans is no exception. I had a great time on the Riverwalk and seeing all the different cultures that makes New Orleans unique. After I toured the school and explored the city, I knew I wanted to come to Xavier.

I have a lot of expectations for my time at Xavier University. I want to be able to make a positive impact on my community and I know I can do that here through different volunteer organizations here at the school. I also hope to be a part of an undergraduate research program. There are so many opportunities and options for students to excel at Xavier and I am excited to be a part of such a wonderful legacy.
