Xavier and My Expectations

August 31, 2012

The mixture of culturally-minded students, strong religious beliefs and relatively small class sizes are just some aspects of Xavier University of Louisiana that helped me choose to attend this institution. Many colleges and universities in the nation do not emphasize the importance of culture into their curriculum. Xavier, on the other hand, embraces culture and strives for students to be aware of many different cultures around the entire world. This aspect of Xavier is extremely important to me because of my future endeavors to become involved in Doctors Without Borders. Additionally, it is essential to be a well- rounded individual as globalization continues to occur around the world.

Along with its emphasis on culture, Xavier University of Louisiana is also the only black catholic institution in the nation. This characteristic not only differentiates the institution from other institutions, but helps to create a strong bond amongst the students and faculty alike. While I am not catholic, I do appreciate the religion and respect its values. Xavier takes pride in its mission “to contribute to the promotion of a more just and humane society by preparing its students to assume roles of leadership and service in a global society”. I also take pride in helping the community. It is our job as the leaders of tomorrow to empower the youth and help to make our society more just and humane.

Another strong attribute of this institution is its relatively small class sizes. I appreciate this because I believe it is necessary to develop a relationship with not only one’s professor or instructor, but one’s peers as well. In high school I made bonds with many of my teachers and peers so much so that many of them are looking forward to attending my college graduation. This bond is necessary because one can learn so much about different people’s perspectives, which is imperative in today’s world.

As I enter the first week of college, I expect it to be exciting and nerve-wrecking at the same time. Throughout my entire senior year, I have constantly told myself “I am so ready for college.”, but now that the time has finally come I am a little scared. I know I am readily prepared for college with the many all-nighters that I have completed throughout my high school years. I am just nervous because this is a new chapter in my life. I am no longer a minor. I am a college student.

Xavier and My Expectations

The most important decision a high school senior has to make is what university they should attend for their undergrad years. Counselors tell you to apply to at least four schools. Those schools should consist of one your dream, most and least expensive, and back up school. For some it is a matter of who gives you the most money, and for others it is whether their dream school accepts them or not. For me, Xavier was one of my choices for college, however it was not my first. I knew Xavier was a great choice, however it was too close to home. I chose to attend Xavier University because I realize for an African American premedical major, Xavier would be the best route I could go in order to get into Medical School. Also, another reason I chose Xavier over any other university I was accepted into was because Xavier gave me to most money in scholarships. My family did not want me to take out private loans to pay for my undergraduate years. One of my expectations at Xavier is to maintain a 3.5 or higher GPA so I can be on the dean list. Another expectation I have while at Xavier is to grow a relationship with my teachers and advisors so that I can get a great recommendation letter for medical school. In high school I never asked for help with my school work. While at Xavier, I expect to change as a person and become more opened to others. I do not think I would be able to make it now without any help. I want to be able to receive tutoring and also able to tutor others. My last expectation at Xavier is to just enjoy my undergraduate years there. I know school comes first, however I would like to have as much fun as I can. I want to really men it when I say, “I am proud to be a Xavierite!”

Xavier and My Expectations

Choosing a college to go to was a hard decision for me. It was one of the biggest decisions of my life. It determines what I want to do with my life when I grow up. I didn’t know if I wanted to stay close to home or go somewhere far away. Money was also a problem for me. I didn’t want to take out big loans just to attend a school that I would never be able to pay off. I choose to attend Xavier University of Louisiana because it is one of the best schools in the nation for students who want to become pharmacists. I knew that I want to become a pharmacist when I was young because it allowed me to help others. I knew that I would get a higher chance of getting accepted into Xavier Pharmacy School if I went there for my undergrad years. Another reason I choose to attend Xavier because some of my family members went and are currently going to Xavier. Also, earning an academic scholarship from Xavier helped me decide if I wanted to go there or not. The academic scholarship was the biggest factor of helping me decide if I wanted to go. The scholarship has allowed me to be less stressful about the tuition costs and more focus on my school work. My expectations are to maintain a good enough GPA that will allow me to go to pharmacy school after my sophomore year, and to retain all the information I learned throughout my freshman year. Being able to retain everything I will learn during my freshman year will help me throughout my college and pharmacy school years. I know that it is going to be hard to get into pharmacy school, but I will give it my all. I also expect that this year will be an enjoyable and fun year.
