If I were SGA President….

September 30, 2010

If I were SGA President I would change many things here at Xavier University. I would change many things with the dormitories. The first thing I would change is visitation for Freshman. I think it’s so ridiculous how the male visitation is limited. It’s not that I want visitation for my boyfriend or anything to come visit, I just want my dad to be able to come up and help me bring my stuff. It’s when my dad brings me back on a Sunday and he can’t come up and help me bring my stuff to the room, I come back with lots of stuff from over the weekend. In other case my little cousin came with my mom pick me up on Friday and my mom wanted to come up to the room, but guys aren’t allowed. I mean he is a little kid. This is something that has to be change. I totally understand we are at Catholic school, but that’s your family.

Also another thing I would change would be that all Xavier south classes would need to be transfers closer to campus. When you have classes in 10 minute intervals it hard to make it to Xavier south and be on time. Then it’s bad when you have teacher who is very strict on time. When you tell them where you are walking from they don’t want to hear what you have to say. So if they can’t become more understanding that you can’t fly to Xavier South then classes need to be transferred. There is all kind of construction going on, build something closer to campus.

Lastly I would have more café’s or restaurants on campus. You only have the option of the cafeteria and the café. There should be other things you can go and eat at. Eventually you’ll get tired of eating in the cafeteria and you may not like what’s in the café. They should have more things to suit people’s needs.

President of SGA

If i was to be the president of SGA the primary issue that I would focus my attention on is to make changes that would better the life of the all freshmen and most upper classmen. The main thing I would change is to have more activities giving to the students on the weekends instead all of them held on the week days.

The reasons that I would change the way the activites are held because most students “freshmen” complain that are nothing to do on campus  on weekends and which they consider campus life boring which makes most of them leave to go home. The activities that I would plan for them on campus is for them to be able to go t the movies, mall, park, and many other fun things. I would also ask the students for other suggestions that they would like to do that would also benefit them in a way that would be enjoyable.

As the SGA president I would also try to benefit the students so that they would not have to pay for each activity during weekday and also on weekends. I would have donations giving to the activity board and also have fundraiser that would help benefit the students in the long run. On the weekends were they are n nothing plan I would plan picnics that would give the students a little taste of New Orleans food and culture. I would also plain trips that would give the student a relax trip from the campus like trips to Baton Rouge and Slidell.

so the reason for me Being SGA President is to change campus life that would  benefit  all students on campus so that there  would be more interest on saying on campus every week and also  better them and the school Xavier University of Louisiana.

If I were SGA President, one of the things that I would do would be to plan more social events at Xavier. We all pay a fee for SGA, but most of us are not really invovled with or pay attention to them. Some students, like me, just go to school and home because there’s nothing to do on campus!

When I was in high school, we had field days where the classes would compete agaisnt each other and carnival days where students just walked around the field and played the mini games, ate popcorn, and jammed to the blasting music! I think that could also happen at Xavier!

I’d like to create more opportunities for people to get to know one another, and not just the people you sit next to in class. In high school, we used to have clubs for everything and I think we could do that at Xavier as well so that people can find other people who have the same hobbies as them!

That would be my primary issue I would address for students. For faculty, I think there should be more instances where students and teachers can cooperate outside the classroom to create a more fun filled environment. I’d also like to have a seperate lounge and meal for teachers so they don’t have to wait in the line at the Dining Hall (unless you guys dont have to already)!

But most importantly, I’d like to make sure that each student and faculty member is safe. I’ve read emails and stories about people being robbed at Xavier and it’s really unnerving to me. I know the police here at Xavier do their best to protect us but I think with an organization as large as student government, maybe we could plan safety nights to help and teach students how to be safe on campus.

Adejare for President.

Almost everyone at Xavier has at least one class at Xavier South. While most teachers are pretty lax about getting to class within the certain time period, There is also valuable information that is lost by being five or ten minutes late. If I were president of SGA, I would try to solve this problem. My first class of the day is at 8 o’clock on the 5th floor of the NCF and my second class of the day is at Xavier South on the second floor. My 8 o’clock teacher lets out exactly at or a minute or so later than 8:50 and my 9 o’clock class begins exactly at 9 on the dot. As my first class ends I quickly make a decision as to if I should wait about two minutes for the elevator or run down 5 flights of stairs…I usually take the elevator because I already have quite a walk ahead of me. With a total of about 3 minutes spent on the elevator I walk towars Xavier South like there is a fire in my pants. Even with a quick pace I get to Xavier South around 9:02 and I get to class usually inbetween then and 9:04. When I get to class I am always able to swipe but My teacher has always already started her lecture  and has to give me a quick synopsis of what she has already said.

If I were SGA President I would try to see if there ws any way we could open a go cart system to Xavier South. This would upen up more job opportunities for Work Study and more students would be relaxed and ready to learn when they get to class. If this Idea is too much of a stretch I would maybe have a conversation with the teachers of Xavier South and convince them to start class a bit later.

SGA PRESIDENT MOODY

September 30, 2010

If I was SGA president there would be alot of stuff i would want to address. Things such as food and certain tutor’s attitude. Although my main focus would be trying to help the less fortunate who are actually trying to be something in life stay in school without the finicial issues. It is really really sad how many students with potential at Xavier University are going to have to leave soon or not be able to re-apply next semester because they didnt receive a scholarship or just cant afford it.Do you know how it feels to have to leave a good institution that you deserve to be at because of financial issues?

I once knew a girl who was very intelligent. She had a 3.933 gpa in high school. Although, she came from a middle class family. She could have easily went to the neighborhood university in her hometown where she would only have to pay 2000 a semester off campus. Not, this young lady she felt like she had worked to hard not to attend a school that was just like she was. ONE OF A KIND. Usually with a gpa like this you are offered an full scholarship but she wasnt. She then applied for one and was denied for certain reasons(I can not say because I dont want to reveal the school).

This is really sad. This girl is at a university that it is hard for her to pay for. Even with all this potential she will most likely end up back at the neighborhood university.I know for a fat that Xavier University has students like this. From what I have heard you have to  be Catholic an from New Orleans to receive a full scholarship.Although I do not know how true it is, if i is true I would work hard to get that changes or at least give my opinion because I would hate to  be that young girl having to go to the neighborhood university.

If I Were President

September 30, 2010

Granted our university is catholic some rules are only enforced towards students. Dorm visitation, curfew, and teaching methods are all a part of the university’s polices, that students should be aware of when entering. I’m aiming more so towards the parenting of students by the university. Occasionally I’ll see a student smoking a cigarette and I notice they try to avoid populated areas, as if they were trying to hide their habit, more recently I saw a university officer ask a student to put out his cigarette, and to refrain from ever smoking on campus. I continually see professors on campus smoking openly, and no one says anything. Although I don’t like smoke rather it be by student or professor, outside is an open area and I can only move in another direction to avoid inhaling it. But why is it ok for a professor to smoke and not a student? Our university clearly promotes good health and prohibits students from smoking, but our teachers who advise us and mentor us are allowed to. Healthy living should be promoted and displayed by campus faculty, staff, and especially by professors; they should set the example for students. We are here aspiring to one day be as successful as them. That’s why if I were the president of SGA I would start a petition to either make campus a smoke free zone or have specified smoke areas, this way at least non-smokers would be aware to avoid smoke zones. I understand that smoking is bad and I’m not promoting it at all, I’m promoting that students be treated like the adults they legally are. Being lazy, over eating, and cramming among other things are also bad, but they are not illegal and are a choice of the given party whether good or bad, smoking should be the same. As long as it does not alter the integrity of our university it should not be prohibited to students, but optional for others.

SGA President

September 28, 2010

straight up i really dont think i would be a good SGA president. but if i was the SGA president i would make sure every student body has a voice when it came down to everything. the main thing i would mostly focus is to get each individual classification to join as one.  just because we all graduate together doesnt mean we are actually the class of wateva year we graduate in. i would like each classification to come together and to work on things they would want to make happen as a whole instead as of just individual. each classification should set a goal for their whole class. what goal or goals they have they should bring them to me and i will try my best to make it happen. i would also make sure when ideas come on the table i would not push them aside. i would take a group of topics or problems or situations and put them in individual categories and come up with one idea for each situation. so basically i would turn boko topics into one narrow topic and just go from there. i would make sure everybody gets the help they need. i would also make a chance for every student to have the opportunity to join any organization. the only thing they will have to do is show a true effort in being in the program. i would do my best to make sure every classification works together and not only one person will have a say on one thing. they would have to bring forth their ideas as a whole.

Becoming Part of a Community

September 24, 2010

Dr. Farmer is a great spectacle of becoming part of a community. Sometimes people have a tendency to look down upon cultures, social classes, or even other people that they feel are less fortunate than them. Regardless of the intent of doing good things or spreading hope, it always seems as if the relationship is metaphorically speaking; A person feeding birds, instead birds helping other birds. Now that’s not the best metaphor but I’m trying to express the idea that people in need don’t want to feel like a charity case, or like they’re bound by someone because they’ve been shown sympathy. I’m not suggesting this is true it’s just my opinion from being on both side of the scenario. Dr. Farmer didn’t walk around villages looking down on his patients, or with flashy things that set him above everyone. He wore they’re clothes, spoke their language, and sympathized with them. This is an ideal way of becoming apart of a foreign community. Dr. Farmer took the saying,”When in Rome, Do as the Romans Do”(St. Ambrose) to heart. Being originally from Indiana and moving to Louisiana I’ve weeded through the differences and similarities and found some commonality in the two places. Becoming a part if this community isn’t nearly as strenuous as Dr. Farmer’s task but it hasn’t been as easy as I had thought either. People speak differently, eat different foods, and use different ebonics than what I’m used to, but nothing separates us more than the things I’ve learned combines us. Turns out I picked up some of their pronunciations, I like their foods, and I habitually use their lingo. Taking time to get to know people of my new surroundings instead of judge them for being different has paid off and made me more in tune with my new community.

The person I think who influenced  Dr. paul farmer in a good way his  was father. His father was actually a great influence on all of his children. He didn’t actually do things that led them into doing positive things. however  it was actually his firm attitude and his drive that made him push his children an extra mile. “ all the farmer children, according to their mother , had craved their father’s approval. He made it hard to get. Come home from high school with an A on a paper he’d say. “ did anyone get an A plus?”(pg.56). This shows how  serious he was about wanting his children to succeed and not wanting to settle for less.  It’s also said that Paul and his father shared certain qualities. Once they focused on a goal, neither one would quit. The person who influenced dr. Farmer badly was Opheila. She thought that Dr.Farmer was too into his work.  She also was a selfish person because she wanted Farmer all to herself. She didnt want him to be all into his studies. To me. a person like is no good. However, someone like this can never be healthy for you. All they’re going to ever do is try to bring you down.

Someone who influces me in a good way is my Grandmother(mostly) but also my mother. These  influneces me the most because they make sure  I saty focus and I never slack down. They make sure I have everything i need that’s goping to make succeed.  They’re always there for me  telling me to keep my head high  when I feel down or stuck in a tough situation. They always tell me that i can do it no matter how difficult it is. I love them for being my strong suppost system. Everyone in my family supports and influences me in a postitive way but it is my mom and my grandmother who are sincere with it. My friends are also a good influence. Actaully, we influence each other. We make sure that we’re on our game when it comes to school.  We never stop one form doing ones work. When it comes to trying to be successful you need people who are going to uplift you, not tear you down!

The shaping of a person

September 24, 2010

When you get married and become a married single, you are no longer living an individual life and that’s exactly the perspective we readers need to look at when giving criticism on Ophelia. Rather than saying that Ophelia has put forth some bad influences on her husband I would say that she has set somewhat a limitation or a set boundary on her husband’s career. It’s not wrong for a wife to have the desire to be able to stay together with her husband. It’s not wrong for a wife to want to have her husband pay more attention to her than the other. As a reader I might consider these desires of Ophelia as self-selfishness but standing  in the position of Dr.Farmer I would consider it as a responsibility that I’ve not yet fulfill. Ophelia’s wish for her husband to spend more time near her seems to be somewhat a burden to Dr.Farmer. Here he is in Haiti working his best to save people’ lives but at the same time having worry about his wif’e’s living condition who lives across the glove. As a reader it’s difficult to take either Dr.Farmer’s side or his wife because both of them are pathetic. Having a husband who always think “I can’t sleep. There’s always somebody not getting treatment. I can’t stand it” make Ophelia’s simple wish become somewhat impossible.

In my point of view, Farmer’s dad is an influential person to him, not in a direct way. By having a harsh personality, Farmer’s dad was able to guide his children in the way he wanted them to be. He proved to his kids that everything is possible for him to achieve and so can they. Farmer’s current charity work in Haiti has proved his father right. Farmer and his father are the type of person who would go for something big no matter if it’s going to turn out a success or not. To be a true successor and a real hero of this world you cannot be a coward who afraid to make mistake and ashame to move on after a failure. When you expect your dream to be achieve, you should expect yourself to having to deal with failure and Dr.Farmer’s heroic life has definitely delivered this message.

Farmer’s dad’s great deed is similar to the deed of my parents. My parents have always been the inspiring models to look at and learn from. Their living life have taught me so so much that it encourages me to continue work on the same path like them. They don’t much of anything: money, good career, a good background. The only thing that they will never be run out is their loving and caring for their children. They’ve done every single thing that they could to shape me into a great person I am today. I’m thankful for everything that was given to me and I wish to deliver my thanks to my parents my doing my best in college so that I can take care of my parents for the rest of their life.
